This is an opportunity to hear current researchers in Drama Education in New Zealand presenting on their projects. Two of these specifically relate to Mantle of the Expert.

All are welcome to attend this day-long seminar. It will be of particular interest to those currently engaged in, or thinking about postgraduate study. Some refreshments will be provided.

A reminder that the next skype discussion for secondary specialists will be held this week – Thursday 25th October (NOT 25th November as previously rumoured!)

Gaenor Stoate will be hosting the call and she has a really interesting idea for the discussion focus. She wants to talk about issues of continuity in the Mantle / drama classroom. That is, how do we as teachers minimise the impact of absenteeism, exclusions and other interruptions within a sustained drama experience….?

I know this has been an issue for several of our experienced secondary mantlers – and I’m sure the beginner teachers amongst us will have ideas to share too.

If you would like to register for this call (which will take approximately one hour) please contact Gaenor by email: gaenor_s@hotmail.com

An Introduction to drama in Educational contexts (including a ‘taste’ of Mantle of the Expert) is being offered in a University of Waikato Summer School, beginning January 7th. The 200 level paper coded TEAL 226 is open to student teachers and inservice teachers looking for professional development in drama. Learning will occur over a two week intensive course based at the University’s beautiful Academy of Performing Arts (pictured).

Further information about the paper and other offerings in Arts Education  over the summer school period can be seen on the attached flier     ArtsEd-DLE

Hi all

Just a reminder that we have our BOP cluster meeting next week at Maungatapu School (Staff Room) at 4pm.

We will be helping Paula plan a Mantle for next term. She has provided the following information to whet our appetite and to get our thinking hats on –

“I have been thinking Christmas mote. Based around different cultures and how Christmas  is celebrated around the world. The conflicts that arise in the Mote could be presents not being able to be delivered by Santa, problems with Christmas meals, decorations etc.  It fits into our social science focus of different cultures around the world.”

Unfortunately our esteemed leader (Dr. Viv) will be unable to attend, due to a family bereavement she will be out of the country.

I look forward to seeing lots of you there to help plan – I think this will be a great exercise for us all!

Cheers

Jon

At long last – here is a chance to view a video of the Mantle of the Expert information evening held at the University of Waikato on 15th March 2012. The workshop was an opportunity for teachers from Waikato and surrounds to share about their use of Mantle of the Expert.

The video is quite long – so is broken into five sections. Please be aware this is not a professional video – camera is hand held and sometimes the sound is not clear… Unfortunately much of the small group work carried out by the teachers did not translate effectively to video, so you mostly see Viv who was facilitating the whole group sections.

The workshop is not an example of Mantle of the Expert BUT it is an attempt to use aspects of Mantle of the Expert to teach about the approach… You will see there are some sections of text within the footage to provide a bit of guidance. Hope it is of interest… Thanks to those who helped with the evening (credits at the end of the film)….

I stumbled on this clip on you tube, which might be of interest. Jeffrey Wilheim, working with high school students in Canada, uses the strategy “role of the expert” to encourage children into a discussion as high status figures. To clarify – though tagged as “mantle of the expert” this isn’t the full MOTE “system” at work….  Indeed, watching it, I was dying to see them shift the space around, get up and work in role as “others” in the drama… All the same, there are some interesting observations from the teachers and children about how much can be shifted even by a short term interaction in high status roles.

The next Waikato Teacher’s Cluster meeting will be held next Thursday 13th – at Hillcrest Normal School, Cambridge Rd, Hamilton at 4pm
Our focus is DRAMA for learning – ideas for bringing drama for learning (multiple perspectives) into your teaching. The focus is not teacher in role, on this occasion, but enhancing opportunities for children’s role taking. This is crucial for Mantle of the Expert but can also enhance teaching and learning anytime.

This will be a hands-on workshop in which a possible planning process will be shared using an example from recent practice.

All welcome!

Thanks to Kineret for posting such a lovely detailed account of our secondary skype chat held last week. We covered a lot of ground didn’t we?!         [To read click here and go to ‘comments’] The next secondary teacher’s skype call will take place on – Thursday, October 25, 7-8pm.

The latest Ed Gazette (15th August) includes a feature on secondary teachers using innovative approaches to support learning in their classroom. Gaenor Stoate of Spotswood College talks about how Mantle of the Expert has been successfully incorporated in her school’s Performing Arts programme. Read more here….
