Just written my final blog post for this year’s mantle at HNS school. Comments from the children include “”I liked getting talked to and talking like an adult” and “I liked being someone else but not at the same time”. Meanwhile the teacher says,  “You should see some of the writing – talk about powerful. You won’t believe some of it is from 10 year old children…”. Check out the whole six week journey by clicking here

Huge thanks to Andy, the school and the students for what has been a fantastic ride… As always so much learned along the way!

Here’s a cute video from Holy island school in Scotland, where teachers have been using Mantle of the Expert for some years.

Sound quality is a bit mixed, but it gives some good explanations of MOTE and I love the way the children talk about how much they love this way of learning.

I hope everyone will take a moment to watch this video. It’s lovely.

The paper you are looking for is ALED 515 14C – Drama as Pedagogy, Mantle of the Expert.  It’s a postgrad paper (for those who already hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher). If you are interested, but have not yet completed your undergrad degree, please email Viv on viva@waikato.ac.nz  as there may be an option for you too.

The course runs  Jan 20 – 24 followed by  a further couple of weeks online and a closing weekend on campus 15-16 Feb.

Lovely gathering at Maungatapu on Friday night. Among other things our korero touched on the way MOTE pedagogy sits alongside Maori educational priorities. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for having us, folks…. Next BOP cluster will be 1st November at Tauranga Waldorf School.

Hi all Mantelers

Just a reminder that Viv is coming over on Friday 23rd August (Maungatapu Primary School from 4.30pm for a 5pm start) – she is bringing her experiences from the MOTE conference in UK and sharing some insights into Commisssion Letters.

I look forward to seeing as many as possible there – don’t forget some light snacks for the table!

Cheers

Jon.

What a good turn out at the cluster meeting last night in Hamilton. Great to see such good numbers. THANKS FOLKS…. Pic at the bottom of this message. Next meeting at Aberdeen school on 17th October – put it in the diary now! We are going to share our best “hook” ideas…..

Meanwhile I promised to post the titles of new drama publications that were launched at the “Heathcote Reconsidered” Conference in London. So – here goes. Looking forward to seeing whoever can make it to tomorrow’s Hamilton cluster meeting at 4.30pm at Knighton School.

And, for those available a little earlier at 3pm, there’s the chance to hear Gaenor Stoate presenting on her recent Master’s research. Gaenor’s study involved using Mantle of the Expert to teach devising at level 2 NCEA. The presentation is in Meeting rooms A-B, at the Faculty of Education, University of Waikato. Just turn up if you are interested.

In my report from the Heathcote conference I mentioned the digital rolling role project that had been trialled by teachers from a range of countries.

Of particular interest to secondary colleagues, this project is an exciting example of how online spaces can be used for drama collaboration. Sue Davis has now kindly shared her slides on slideshare. Well worth a look.

Hello all

I’m just about to embark on a six week mantle adventure with five student teachers, 31 children, one visiting PhD student  and a brave teacher (Andy Peart from HNS school). If you’d like to read the blog about our adventures, please visit

http://hnsmantleadventure2013.blogspot.com/2013/07/preplanning.html.

Once you are on the page, you can even subscribe to the blog to get updates in your email… Last year’s blog had 2000+ views – which is a very scary thought but does show that this is a good way to share our work…. Perhaps YOU could think about doing a blog too (and if you have not already checked out Priya’s wonderful blog – there’s a link from the mantle website).
